SQA CLASS evaluation report published - social software and assessment
RI has successfully managed a Moodle site for SQA for the last year, in support of a project that aimed to test the use of social software as way of gathering evidence for assessment purposes. An independent evaluation of the project concluded that the use of social software in this way provided realistic and accessible opportunities for collaborative learning using the internet. The main conclusion from this study was that each of the stakeholder groups (students, tutors, SQA markers, SQA staff) were able to realise almost all of the planned benefits from the use of this software. Students appreciated the flexibility offered by the online system to accommodate their learning styles and patterns of working, the transparency of the working of the group and the tracking of their own contributions.
Overall the project has been a great sucess and it is hoped that it will continue during the next academic year.
Success at e-fair
Patrick McDaniel and Jaki Huston-Campbell of the BRS organised a successful 'Show and Tell' activity at the regional e-fair. Delegates were impressed with both the quality of the materials and the content, with many colleges expressing an interest in being able to access the materials for their equine students. The event was organised by the JISC Regional Support Centre.
e-induction programme for Linkage
RI has started a new contract supporting the development of a new e-induction programme for staff at the Linkage Community Trust. The material is to provide an alternative to attending a formal induction training session. It is seen as a way of ensuring easy access to the basic company induction and removing the need for new entrants to wait until there are sufficient numbers to run the course. The new materials will hosted on-line as part of Moodle. They will provide a background to the organisation and will provide the basics of safety, safeguarding, equality and diversity and the Law.
elearning course now available - Online Safety for All RI has recently completed the development of a new e-learning course in the area of on-line safety. The course is available via our VLE and is aimed at parents and carers. It introduces the potential dangers associated with the internet and provides some simple strategies to keep children safe online. Email patrick@ritraining.co.uk to find out how you can access this learning programme.
Sustainable Business Practice
Consultants at RI have been working with the food and drink industry and the construction and oil industry to develop National Occupational Standards in Sustainable Business Practice. The units have been submitted for accreditation. These standards reflect the broad spectrum of issues relating to sustainable business practice; resource efficiency, environmental performance and corporate social responsibility. These units will eventually form the basis for units of assessment for inclusion into the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF). Watch this space for further developments!
Safeguarding vulnerable adults online
RI has produced an online learning resource to help carers safeguard children and vulnerable adults. The e-learning programme is designed to inform carers of the potential dangers faced when vulnerable adults use the Internet or other forms of electronic communication. The materials are hosted on Linkage's own Moodle site designed and developed by RI.
RI is now working on further resources for Linkage
This collaborative project which will involve creating a new e-learning package for induction training covering company procedures, prior to work with Linkage.
RI installs real time collaborative working tool to SQA Moodle site
Students across Scotland are making the most of the innovative Wiki and Blog functions developed by RI. The Moodle site installation allows collaborative project work between students in different locations, supporting student's individual development. This is the first time that SQA have used Moodle in this way.
Moodle VLE site extension
The Seafish Industry Authority’s Moodle site has been operating successfully for over a year. The site is a web based learning environment which allows 24/7 access to learning programmes. Seafish have now asked RI to extend its application to provide access to a further five safety courses required by UK fishermen/women. Topics to be covered include fire fighting, first aid and basic health and safety.
A Moodle site for Horses
Well not exactly for horses themselves! RI has successfully implemented a Moodle based virtual learning environment for the British Racing School (BRS) in Suffolk. It will allow their students to access e-learning materials developed by RI. These materials will be the first of many hosted on-line via Moodle.
